Resident Potter Information and Application

About Hickory Flat Pottery (HFP) : My name is Cindy Angliss and I am the owner and main potter at Hickory Flat Pottery. I also have an apprentice who is a student at North Georgia College and is leaving in May to open her own studio. I have had numerous apprentices over the years. Tasha has been with me part time for several years. I am excited and proud for her being able to go off on her own. I would also like to think, and she would agree, that her time spent at HFP has given her some of the tools to do this. My objective is to repeat and expand this experience. As HFP has grown, I realize the need for a full time resident potter position. This is a one year position with the possibility of extension.

HFP consists of a studio with two wheels, pug mill, slab table, extruder, ware racks, and glaze area. On an attached covered porch are two electric kilns; one large bisque, and a smaller high fire electric. Past this is a large enclosed building housing a 60 cu. Ft. downdraft gas kiln, ware carts, storage, etc. Beyond that is a slab for the addition of a salt kiln which the resident potter would participate in building and firing within the upcoming year. Attached to the studio is a large Gallery area, thus customers can watch all aspects of making pots. Most pots made in the studio are sold through the gallery. The remainder go to 1 craft show and consigned to 1 community art gallery. As you will see when you read
on, HFP is positioned in a thriving area where people appreciate and buy good pottery. The studio has windows on two sides which look out on a garden. The Gallery consists of three large rooms, one with a gas fireplace, and a large wrap-a-round porch and many windows.

Upstairs with a private entrance is a furnished two bedroom apartment w/living, dining area w/ gas fireplace, kitchen, office area, small back deck, and screened porch. This would be the resident potter’s living space.

Resident Potter Duties: The RP would work a 40 hr. workweek, with a 1?2 hr. lunch break. I am flexible with days and try to give every other weekend off. This changes in July and October (busiest times) when it’s not unusual for the 40 hr. work week to include Saturday and Sunday, and off days being during the week. I am conducive to flexing hours as long as the 40 hrs. are put in, the work is done, and the Gallery is covered.

Duties will in large part depend on past experience, abilities, knowledge, willingness to work, and determination. If you come to the position proficient at the wheel, you will make your own pots and they will be sold through the gallery immediately. Should you come with minimal wheel experience, you will do more slab work and spend more time “in training” on the wheel. All of the work you do will be sold through the gallery. Pots that are exclusively made by me, are signed by me. Pots that are my design but made by you are signed Hickory Flat Pottery. Pots that are exclusively made by you and are your design are signed by you with your name. In this way creativity and growth are encouraged.

Below are listed some, but not all responsibilities:
1. Making pots on the wheel under my direction.
2. Making slab pots under my direction. Most slab pots are made by draping clay over or inside
handmade, molds.
3. Trimming pots, smoothing, adding handles, etc.
4. Loading, unloading, firing bisque kilns.
5. Mixing glazes, glazing pots
6. Recycling clay, keeping studio clean
7. Hauling clay- clay and materials are delivered by the ton 4-5 times a year in 50 lb. boxes and is hand trucked from the front porch to the studio. This is really no big deal but mentioned so all applicants know that this is a very physically demanding job.
8. Helping load, unload gas kiln. The gas kiln is fired every 3 weeks. I mostly do the firing but am more than willing to teach and share whatever knowledge I have.
9. Assist and sell to customers. Most customers are happy to watch us, browse, and then let us know when they are ready to buy. It is a very laid back atmosphere. July and October are our busiest months when more customer attention is needed. Generally we tend to make more production type, easier pots during these times.
10. Open and Close Gallery. Settle Visa/ MasterCard at end of day. Put Open/ Closed signs up. Turn off lights, etc.
11. Pack and ship. HFP does not wholesale and we only occasionally ship for customers. Most pots go directly from the kiln to the gallery and out the door.
12. Computer work. Enter names and addresses in computer data base. Occasionally write press releases for newspapers. I am sadly lacking in computer skills. Any and all computer skills will be a big plus on your application!
13. Stock and re-stock Gallery. Maintain Gallery as in dust, sweep floor etc.
14. Some yard maintenance as in care of a small garden and mowing yard.

Resident Potter Benefits:
1. Fully furnished apartment as described above, includes utilities, and internet access.
2. An annual salary between $12,000 and $10,000 per year to be determined depending on experience.
3. The RP will learn all aspects of operating a working pottery from technical aspects of working w/clay to marketing, PR, sales, ordering supplies, networking, running a Gallery, working w/ people, and hopefully having a great time while doing all the above!
4. Use of all pottery equipment after hours. The RP will be expected to produce certain production pieces during work hours but may experiment after hours on your own. Pots made on your own may be placed in the Gallery on a consignment basis or bought outright from HFP for the cost of materials and firing. HFP encourages creativity.
5. In April 2009, the RP will have their work featured in a special show at HFP which will include press releases, mail outs , and reception.
6. Location…HFP is 1&1/2 hrs to Atlanta, the same distance to Athens (UGA-Watkinsville) (Georgia Perspectives) and a huge pottery center), 2 hrs. to Asheville, N.C., 15 minutes to SNCA and the Folk Pottery Museum, 4 miles to Mark of the Potter, another thriving pottery, and numerous other galleries and interesting shops.
7. The opportunity to build and fire a salt kiln.
8. Live and work in a gorgeous area. HFP is 4 miles from Lakes Burton, Seed and Rabun, close to numerous waterfalls and hiking trails, rafting, kayaking, and State Parks including Tallulah Gorge State Park. Artists and musicians abound in this area.

Feel free to call or e-mail, should you have any questions. Applications will be reviewed as they are sent. I am neither looking for the person with the most nor least experience but the best match. I have had many apprentices over the years and have found that attitude, a sense of humor, curiosity, willingness to work, and tenacity are important characteristics.

Application
Please Email the following to hfpottery@applebank.net. Please include the words Resident Potter in the

1. A letter of introduction with a brief description of yourself and why you are applying to be a resident potter.
2. A resume
3. Four (4) digital pictures of your work
4. Three (3) references with phone number(s). You can jumpstart the process by having your references e-mail letters of reference directly to me.
